General Information
The Granit RCM is located east of Sherbrooke, near the U.S. border. It consists primarily of forest and agricultural land (85%). The principal industrial sectors are wood and granite processing and construction. The city of Lac-Mégantic is the main service centre in the region.
Society
The RCM is set in a magnificent natural environment, in which culture and recreation contribute to its distinctive regional flavour. In addition to year-round social and cultural activities, the area is well suited to sports and outdoor activities (snowshoeing, skating, golf, hockey, etc.). The population also has access to the Centre de santé et de services sociaux du Granit, which, after a $14.5 million renovation and the purchase of $3.5 million in equipment, has become a modern model of health care integration.
Economy
The manufacturing sector is the economic engine of the RCM. Approximately 100 businesses operate in the wood, construction, granite and agri-food sectors. The development of major natural or cultural attractions and the availability of accommodations and restaurants has secured the RCM’s growing reputation as a resort destination of choice for tourists. The tertiary sector, a crucial complement to the manufacturing sector, includes over 300 trades and services, while the agroforestry sector includes more than 600 operations.
